For years, runners have been able to take advantage of Nike+, a nifty accessory that lets your iPod communicate with your shoes to turn it into a personal running coach of sorts.

Soon, cyclists will have access to a tool that’s in the same vein as Nike+, but far more powerful. It’s called Pedal Brain, and it allows your iPhone or iPod Touch to receive and interpret data from a variety of exercise devices that use the ANT+ wireless protocol.

ANT+ is used by cyclists (including many professionals) to accurately measure and analyze their performance over a ride, but until now there hasn’t been a way to connect these devices to your iPhone.

That’s where Pedal Brain comes in. The bootstrapped startup is making a small device called the Pedal Brain Synapse that plugs into your iPhone or iPod Touch and allows them to receive this data, which is then interpreted by an iPhone app. The application shows you how you’re performing in real-time (you’ll want to mount your iPhone in plain view) and can also use GPS to show the position of your team members. Once you’ve completed your ride, you’ll be able to log on to the Pedal Brain site to get more detailed analysis. The site will also have an integrated platform for coaches, so you sign up to get your own trainer to help plot your future rides and track your progress.

Pedal Brain founder Matt Bauer acknowledges that there are a handful of other cycling applications available for the iPhone, like Map My Ride, but says that these only offer basic data. That’s because they rely on your phone’s GPS for data, which can help gauge the distance you’ve travelled but can’t measure many of the things that ANT+ devices can. Bauer explains that power (in Watts) is a common metric used to gauge your progress, and can’t be accurately determined using GPS alone.

Pedal Brain’s iPhone/iPod accessory, which has already been approved by Apple, will be available through local bike shops this spring. The company is targeting a March release date and plans to sell the device for between $130 and $190. The online service will be subscription based, though users will be able to get a limited version for free (you won’t be able to track your data for longer than a couple weeks).

While online dating was popularized in the 2000s, the 2010s will surely give rise to the latest trend in electronic dating: mobile matchmaking services. These services, which usually operate via an iPhone application, locate other singles based on your current location.

As reported by The Washington Post, one such dating service, Skout, recently polled its users to understand how this new technology is being used.

While the results only apply to the vanguard of the mobile dating scene, the findings may provide insight into what the mainstream dating landscape will look like in a few years, when iPhones are as common as camera phones. The below statistics are based on a survey of roughly 500 male and 500 female Skout users, 20-30-years-old.

-51% have met-up with a single they “met” on their iPhone and 69% feel comfortable doing so.

-40% use cell phone dating services while in bars, clubs, and restaurants.

-20% exclusively use these services outside the home.

-35% use it at work.

-Only 29% believe spending time with the family takes priority over dating during the holidays.

-20% already have a significant other, half of who use the service with their partner’s approval.

Taking the iPhone to a whole new level of functionality, Dynamic Controls has just announced they’ll be releasing an iPhone app soon that will allow disabled individuals the freedom to control their power wheelchairs via the iPhone or iPod Touch.

It works via Bluetooth and as you can see with the screenshots above, is a very comprehensive app that also displays a variety of wheelchair settings as well.

Here’s what CEO Charlotte Walshe of Dynamic Controls had to say about their new offering:

“We recognised the iPhone has revolutionized the way people communicate and saw the opportunity to develop this solution for wheelchair users, taking full advantage of Apple’s ‘Works with iPod / Made for iPhone’ developer program.”

This iPhone app will probably become available next year once the compatible wheelchair controller is launched in the market already. As useful as this iPhone app is, you definitely wouldn’t want this falling into the hands of the wrong person as this can certainly have dire consequences in the end.

The outward appearance looks like Apple, is different in the iPhone gap apple, our apple unusual completeness, hasn’t been nipped absolutely by who! Fresh light green apple, saliva 3000 ten feets? Above also has a lovable apple handle! Middle has the silver-white color apple to symbolize, waits for an opportunity when will have the red indicating lamp twinkle!

I’m not sure I understand them completely, but from what I can gather, the Apple phone is more genuine than the other Apple phone (iPhone) not just in shape but in the inclusion of a real glowing Apple logo. It’s available in several colors. Features include Bluetooth and FM tuner. No pricing yet, but don’t they look pricey? Another photo after the break.

Mozilla CEO John Lilly has, in a recent interview, shed some light on its upcoming iPhone App. Well, not much except that it is an app.

That said, any app for the iPhone from Mozilla would be interesting. This is because Mozilla is famously known for its browser and to have a different browser apart from the default Safari browser on the iPhone is almost impossible. Apple did approve two browsers late last year though - but none of them was from major developers like Opera or Mozilla.

So, it is interesting to note what kind of an application is Mozilla actually working on.

While it’s quite natural for anyone to assume it might be a new browser, keeping in mind Apple’s stand on third party browsers, we can also expect a software other than a browser. It could be anything, ranging from a bookmark sync tool or a plug in for the existing Safari browser.

Mozilla is making a big push into the mobile browsing territory and already has browsers for Windows Mobile and the Maemo platforms.

[Thanks: http://www.techtree.com]

Hey, it’s special guest gamer contributor Mark Rowan writing about video games again! This time he’s digging through the endless muck Apple calls the iPhone App Store to find a game worth your hard-earned money. Making avoiding eye contact on the subway that much easier!

With the release of Shrek Kart last week, I thought it would be fitting to highlight what is being called the best kart racing game on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Cocoto Kart Online, which made its way to the App Store last month, doesn’t have the well-known and/or cute cast of characters its competitors have to offer. What it does offer, however, is affordability and online multiplayer, both of which no one else is offering at the moment.

Maybe $2.99-7.99 doesn’t seem like that pricey of a purchase—though $7.99 is outrageous—but 99 cents? I couldn’t help but instinctively tap “install” when I saw Cocoto’s current sale price. Saving $2 or more is all well and good, and yes having online multiplayer for a racing game is an essential feature (unless you’re, you know, underground during your commute), but that’s all for naught if the gameplay is dreadful (see: Car Jack Streets for free last weekend. No thanks).

Well, to make this easy, if you have any fond memories left over from Mario Kart 64 then I couldn’t recommend this to you more. All kart racers today borrow from the king, but the sound, the handling and even the items (thunderbolt anyone?) all have a comforting familiarity here. It’s still not going to rid you of all the regret you feel for ever selling your Nintendo 64 at a stoop sale in 2000, but it helps.

The free application — “app,” in iPhone lingo — also can locate a nearby dealer and contact a service department.

The lender says it is the first financial services company to launch such an app, which it is billing as “The coolest way to make a payment.”

The situation surrounding Elgato’s EyeTV app continues to swirl - the application was removed from the App Store yesterday, only to reappear on the US, UK and German versions of the store overnight.

At this time yesterday, the understanding was that the App had been removed from sale because it included an Easter egg which could enable streaming over 3G.

On the withdrawal of the app, Elgato said, “Some test code that enabled live TV streaming over the cellular network was accidentally left in the the EyeTV App,” the company said. “Apple requested that we remove the code since their agreement with AT&T does not allow redirecting TV signals over the cellular network. The code was removed and a 1.0.1 version of the EyeTV app was submitted. We expect EyeTV to return to the App Store when the 1.0.1 version is approved.”

You’d think the version of the App that’s now available on the App Store would be the revised 1.0.1 version, but this does not seem to be the case.

A tipster told 9to5Mac, “This appears to to the original 1.0.0 version, though they might have neglected to change the name,” the insider also explained Elgato submitted version 1.0.1 on Saturday, “so if this isn’t the update, it’s certainly on its way.”

The EyeTV application is presently available here on iTunes US - do let us know if it disappears again…

Google voices its thoughts

Ending all the “he-said’s she said’s” of the past few months, Google has finally dropped its request for confidentiality from the FCC over the rejection of its Google Voice application from the Apple app store.

With the veil of secrecy finally lifted, what becomes apparent is not only that Apple rejected Google’s Voice app back in July, but that the iPhone maker had given a completely different version of events when asked for its side of the story a while back.

The letter, sent on August 21st from Google to James Schlichting of the FCC confirmed that Apple’s senior vice president of global marketing, Phil Schiller, had clearly informed the Internet search giant that its application had been rejected, even though, in the same month, Apple was still maintaining the app was undergoing review.

“Contrary to published reports, Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application and continues to study it,” a letter from Apple to the FCC reads.

Google Voice, which generates a single phone number for users to be used across multiple devices, has become a big hit on Google’s own Android operating system. The app is also capable of transcribing voice messages into text format, perfect for those too busy to play back and listen to their answering machines.

When you want to down a Guinness a new iPhone app can now point you in the right direction. The app was created to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Guinness on September 24th.

Unfortunately for many the app is forbidden by law to work in the following states, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas or West Virginia.

For those fortunate enough to be able to access the app, it doesn’t only help you find a drink but provides additional utility as follows:

• Locate a Pint - uses GPS to locate the consumer and the pubs serving Guinness nearest to their current location. It then provides name, address and telephone number of the pub chosen, access to directions, and an email setup to invite friends to join.

• Know Your Pint - provides a tutorial on the 6 Steps to Creating the Perfect Pint, and also includes a ruler that can be used to measure your pint’s head.

• Fun Extras – includes animated screensavers, a countdown clock to the “Arthur’s Day” celebrations and a live feed of the latest news regarding the Guinness 250th Anniversary celebration

• Responsible Drinking – Provides consumers with the DRINKiQ resource which shares important facts about alcohol to aid responsible choices.

The app is US$1.99 in the iTunes store and its available now.
